I don’t think a picture could describe quite literally what it feels like to be a working artist in our current climate. ⠀ ⠀ In the beginning, I never could justify selling my art on masks, because, to me personally, it felt like capitalising on a pandemic. I’ve never felt comfortable doing political art. Not because I don’t have any political stances, but for me, my work is about things that bring joy (like my love for animals) or escaping into mythology & folklore. I always love a good story, and there are SO MANY. Ahh, the Greater Roadrunner, or as they’re known in more “scientific” circles as Tastyus Supersonicus. These desert dwelling birds can outrun humans (and the occasional cartoon-based coyote), kill & eat rattlesnakes, and get some of their water by eating moisture-rich prey. This bird for the Bird Whisperers probably has the most interesting name, Australian Boobook. It is the smallest owl native to Australia’s mainland, and feeds on a large number of insects, mice, and even small birds (think house sparrow). It has 8 subspecies all classified by their distinct calls. Here’s another fancy little bird for the Bird Whisperers! I introduce you to the American Goldfinch. This little bird ranges from Canada, where it breeds, to Mexico, where it overwinters. It’s actually one of the few birds that has benefited from human deforestation, because it prefers the open meadows. Happy Arbor Day! I signed up for this virtual 5k back in December. It was one of those ads on fb, and I HAD to go for it. It spoke to me on multiple levels, and the timing worked perfectly. I love that the theme was Bob Ross, the cause was for MI state parks, and it motivated me to try running a 5k for the first time. Was my timing great? Nope. Did I take walk breaks? Yep. Was it fun? Also, yes. Definitely will be doing more (either virtual or not) in the future. I’m going to need to practice more, but that’s life. Tiny skulls! This is another of the mini skull paintings that was finished recently. This one is dedicated to my almost 2-decade-long love of Japanese culture. A new set of mini skull paintings I’ve been working on! This one in particular is dedicated to Erzulie, a Haitian Loa of Love. A Loa is a spirit or goddess, and this particular one has many forms (almost like the triple goddess): Erzulie Freda the virgin, Erzulie Dantor of passion (also the patron loa of lesbians), or La Siren of motherhood. This month’s bird for the @birdwhisperer.project is the NorthernCardinal! First, I’d like to dedicate this to my grandmother, Mary, who passed shortly after Christmas. She loved cardinals, and beyond leaving food for them, she had everything from sun-catchers to blankets with them on it. She would also listen/watch the St. Louis Cardinals baseball games all the time. I’ve inherited them as my favorite team as well.⠀ ⠀ Cardinals are native to North America. They live in their habitat year round and mate for life. They symbolize pride, hopefulness, and brilliance. They are the state bird for SEVEN states (IL, IN, KY, NC, OH, VA, & WV)!
